Email Marketing Terminology for Bloggers

Don’t know the difference between your autoresponder and your broadcast, a single opt-in from a double or your CTR from your bounce rate? Email Marketing terminology can be full of acronyms.

 

Don’t worry either did we when we started out.

 

There are some terms that email marketers and email marketing software use that may be new to bloggers.
Like any industry, there are certain terms and buzzwords that have been used for years that don’t always get explained.

 

Email Marketing Terminology for Bloggers

 

To make life easier for bloggers starting out on their email marketing journey, we have listed the key terms that you will come across as you embark on email marketing.

 

A

Acceptable Spam Report Rate: A Rate that recipients flag your mail as spam (0.1% is acceptable).

 

A/B split: Sending two different emails to see which performs best. e.g. send headline 1 to 50% of your list and headline 2 to the other 50%. Then assess which headline gets more opens. This test will show which type of headline performs better and this learning can be applied to future emails.

 

Above the fold: Part of the email visible when the email is viewed without a requirement to scroll.

 

Autoresponder: Automated email messages programmed to be sent to people who subscribe to your list. Sometimes 5-10 emails are set to arrive every couple of days for the initial month of being on your list.

 

B

 

B-to-B: Business-to-business (also B2B).

 

B-to-C: Business-to-consumer (also B2C).

 

Blacklist: A list that classifies email addresses & IP’s as banned from delivering email.

 

Bounce Rate: The number of emails that don’t deliver.

 

Broadcast: Mass Email sent to a section or your entire list.

 

C

 

CTR (Click-Through Rate): The percentage of people who click a link within your email.

 

D

 

Double Opt-In: When subscribers sign up for your email address, they must click a verification email sent to them before they are added to your list.

 

E

 

Email Campaign: An email or number of emails with a specific goal e.g. sell tickets to an event.

 

Email Sponsorships: Payment for advertising space within your email broadcast.

 

Embed Code: A line of HTML code that you add to your page/post that will place an opt-in box in that location.

 

F

 

False positive: Occurs when a legitimate email is prevented from delivering as it is flagged as malicious or not adhering to a company’s user policy.

 

H

 

Hard Bounce: The email address does not exist.

 

HTML Email: Formatted glossy email created using HTML code.

 

L

 

Landing Page: Page with an objective of selling products or getting email subscribers.

 

List Segmentation: Sending an email to a subset of your list based on behaviour or specific information on your subscribers.

 

O

 

Open Rate: Percentage of emails opened.

 

Opt-In (or Subscribe): Rate that website visitors subscribe to your email list.

 

Opt-Out (or Unsubscribe): An email subscriber who decides to no longer receive an email from you or be on your list.

 

P

Personalisation: Including personal attribute unique to a subscriber within an email e.g. {name} You Must…

 

Plain Text Email – Text Only email

 

S

 

Single Opt-In: Adding a subscriber to your email list with requiring them to click a confirmation link sent to their inbox.

 

Soft Bounce: Temporary mail rejection due to full inbox or some other issue such as their mail server being down.

 

Spam: Email sent to a user without their consent.

 

T

Tag: To tag an email subscriber with a certain label, this is then used when it comes to segmentation of the list

 

 

W

 

Whitelist – List of email addresses & IP’s listed as acceptable addresses to receive an email from.

 

Now that we understand all of the buzz words, we’ll be getting down to the nitty-gritty of setting up our email software.
