Creating Your First Blog Post

With our site now up and running we need to consider our first blog post and what people are going to read once they get there.


Before we announce to the world that we are open for business we’re going to need more than just our first blog post for them to read.


Ideally, before we go live, so to speak, we should have at least three articles on our blog and three more in draft form waiting to be published.


That way when people do come to our site, they will have or first blog post and enough other content there to consume in order for them to decide if our blog is worth connecting with on social or even leaving their email address.


The idea behind having more than just our first blog post created is so that we can focus on other aspects of our blog for the first three-four weeks rather than getting sucked into writing content.


Your First Blog Post


When we start out we are full of ideas and inspiration, it’s a fantastic time, we have more ideas than we know what to do with.


At this point, we should be writing them down and keeping these ideas safe, because we are going to need them sooner or later. For our first blog post, however, we should aim to be very conservative about it.


Don’t worry there will be plenty of time to create that epic blog post that has been rattling around in your brain.


Press Release


The first blog post we want to publish should be a kind of “press release” style article.


This will ultimately announce that our blog is up and running and set the expectation as to what readers can expect from us.


Now we are not going to get bogged down in some the things we would have to consider if it were an actual press release, but the idea is that our first blog post should be an announcement and newsworthy, so it’s up to us to make such.


What we suggest for your first blog post is to write an article that speaks directly to the readers, use words like “you” “we” and “us”.


You should introduce yourself, including relevant education or awards, but keep it very short 1-2 lines, they don’t really want to know about you just yet. Why you set up the blog, your hopes for the blog and what the blog is going to do for the reader.


Basically, your first blog post should tell them a little bit about you and more importantly why they should pay a blind bit of notice to you and your new corner of the internet.


Here you can talk about the types of content to come, the frequency and then ask them to connect with you on your main social site.


That should do it for your first blog post.


List Post


Our second blog post should be something that people are going to find interesting and potentially share.


List posts are great for this and relatively easy to put together.


So what we want here is a list of helpful resources, best shops, saloons, tools, etc.


Whatever is topical in your niche at the moment.


Because we are new, it is going to take something rather eye-catching, so aim for a reasonably big list where possible, by big we mean 10-20.

The third article we want to have live on our site should be a how-to.


People love a good how-to article, these too garnish a lot of love, so think about the problems your readers might have and aim to solve one of them.


Perhaps, this isn’t really an article it’s a video and only a small amount of text, the medium is up to you.

Story Post


The next article we recommend is a “story post”.


Here you can give the audience a little glimpse into your world. There are many “types” story you can tell as a blogger, but I really want you to focus in on telling a story that will help you connect with your audience.


Try and give your audience a little bit of context on you, share with them a story that they may not know about you. I don’t mean that it has to be an overly personal story if you don’t want it to be, but make it applicable to you.

Review Post


The fifth post should be a review, this is the perfect time to show people that you know your topic and have some insight to share.


Review post are loved by the search engines. After all, people go to Goggle looking for information on products and services, so it is one of those “styles” of blog post that people are actively searching for.


They are super shareable. We as consumers tend to tell our friends and family if we are thinking of buying something or going somewhere, so when they see a review of that product or place they generally share it with the person they know will be interested in it.


They are great for engagement. People who read the review may have other questions you may not have answered, so by opening the door for comment or questions on your review, we can begin to drive engagement and interaction with our readers.


The last one I want to point out is trust. Review posts are fantastic for building trust. That is, of course, assuming that you write an honest review.


If you review a product and your audience agree with the review having purchased the product then you will become a trusted source of information.

What did you dream of?


The final article is up to you, we have covered a few different styles of blog post in the five above and the last one is up to you.


Pick one of the topics you really wanted to cover when you decided to start the blog and go for that.


Make that post is everything you wanted it to be, but most importantly, have fun with it.




Write your first blog post in that “press release style”. Take 25 minutes to tell your new audience who you are and what they can expect from you going forward.


Once you have that done, share a link to it in the comments section below so we can all have a read. You never know, you may get new followers from it.


For the remainder of the content, you are going to have to factor in the time to write it over the course of this week. schedule time in your calendar to get the content written as soon as you can, the rest of this week is pretty light on time, so use this as an opportunity to write the remaining five articles.
