[Email Marketing] Review of the Best Email Marketing Software for Bloggers

Find out the best email marketing software for bloggers

As far as we (and many others) are concerned, every blogger should have an email list. However, as we have already learned, many don’t. Knowing the best email marketing software for bloggers is often a problem.

There are a number of reasons as to why bloggers don’t have “a list”, there is the time, the effort and of course the money and the know-how.

Well, hopefully over the remainder of the week, we’ll be able to get you past all of those barriers and to a place where you will have your list up and running.

What is the Best Email Marketing Software for Bloggers?

This is where a lot of blogger and vloggers fall down. There are quite a few different email clients you can use and some, unfortunately, chose the wrong one for them.

Over the years we have tried and test most of them and really when it boils down to it, there are three that stand out, but even of those three, there is only one winner as far as we are concerned.

Despite maintaining a list of over 13,000 subscribers using Aweber and having also used Mailchimp for our blogging clients and students, we chose to use ConvertKit when it comes Content.Academy.

Now I know what many of you are thinking, but MailChimp is free and you’re right. MailChimp has a  free version available for bloggers with a list of fewer than 2000 subscribers but its lack of auto responder with the free version is a major deterrent.

There are hundreds of email marketing software’s available. Some email marketing software focuses on customer relationship management and lead generation. Other’s focus on advanced marketing automation and list segmentation.

Email marketing software can quickly become an expensive burden for a blogger if the wrong software is purchased. It can also cause a blogger to miss out on one of the critical success tools in their arsenal, their email list.

Email Marketing is the Bloggers Not So Secret Weapon!

At Content Academy we have been running email marketing campaigns since 2008. Blogging has always been our focus. We use email marketing to share advice to our followers, sending them links to new content and to sell products.

Email marketing has gone backwards in recent years. Initially, it was about creating signature templates with glossy images that were in line with your blog and brand. The upsurge in email consumption on smartphones has led a simple text only email marketing resurgence.

Winner #1: ConvertKit is the Best Email Marketing Software for Bloggers

Price: 3/5
Ease of Use: 4/5
Relevant Blogger Tools: 4/5
Total Score: 73%

This service is the new kid on the block and is specifically built for bloggers. It is evident that each element of the service is made for bloggers, it is the clear winner of all the email marketing software’s that we used.

It’s blend of simplicity when it comes to assessing your statistics, creating broadcasts, creating opt-in boxes and sending automated sequences makes the difference. The service is also very reasonably priced when compared to more advanced solutions such as Infusionsoft.

ConvertKit Pricing

For 3000 Subscribers it is $49 per month

ConvertKit Forms

Small things like being able to compare performance of opt-in boxes is great

At a glance, you can see which lead magnets are achieving the best results so you can improve your blog. Clearly, our 101 Blogging Tips are performing much better than 30 Minute Blogger Updates converting at rates of 21.2% vs 2.8%.

ConvertKit Broadcast

You can broadcast emails to segments of your list and it is easy to see how each is performing.

Second Place: Aweber

Price: 4/5
Ease of Use: 3/5
Relevant Blogger Tools: 3/5
Total Score: 66%

As a customer of Aweber for other online businesses that we run, it does what it says on the tin. It provides a number of beautiful email templates (although slightly redundant these days) and gives you access to the basic statistics of your email broadcasts.

Aweber Header

Aweber has over 120,000 customers globally and easily would make any Top 10 Email Marketing list. For Bloggers the analytics and email autoresponder automation could be a little better.

Aweber Pricing
For an email list of between 5000 and 10,000 addresses Aweber is $69 per month and Aweber is $75. Both services are very similarly priced and have a very similar feel when using them.

Aweber Subscribers

Third Place: Mailchimp

Price: 4/5
Ease of Use: 2/5
Relevant Blogger Tools: 2/5
Total Score: 53%

With other 6 million customers, Mailchimp is the most dominant email marketing software on the market. The bonus for bloggers with this service is that it is available for free for up to 2000 users. But wait…

MailChimp Pricing

…Mailchimp may be free for 2000 users on your list with a 12,000 email send limit! Sounds great, except for one thing.

The features for the auto-responder that bloggers require only become available when you upgrade to the paid version. This is a real frustration as that is key to blogging success in the long term. The free version is not the best email marketing software for bloggers due to this missing feature.

The service requires a double opt-in which is better but means that your list will be smaller and some legitimate subscribers will miss out.

As you can see we maintain a list of over 13,000 subscribers on Aweber, there really is little to choose between this platform and MailChimp. In conclusion, the features and simplicity of ConvertKit make it the best email marketing software for bloggers.
