The most important and striking words should be at the start of your sentences, otherwise people may not read on.


Handley highlights an opening sentence of a report by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and shows a better way to write it.


“According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, released in 2006 by the U.S Department of Education, 30 million adults struggle with basic reading tasks.”


Now lets look at a better way to write that sentence.


Thirty million adults struggle with reading, according to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy report, released in 2006 by the U.S. Department of Education.”


The second sentence captures our attention and compels us to read on, the first sentence causes you to zone out.



Get to the point and avoid rambling sentences that contain a needless preamble.

It is important to have some congruence between your lifestyle goals and your business goal. Pat also explains that your personal journey does contain an “Unfair Advantage”. Alignment here helps you stay focused.


Great customer anecdotes that emphasise your customers needs will strengthen your idea. Bloggers create avatars to write to, but having actual people share stores of your content helping them will help your blog stand out from the crowd.


Top Tip #4: [Product Validation] Final Validation is Achieved when 10% will Invest in Advance

Initial interest is not enough to prove validation, potential customers must be willing to invest. Contact potential customers and pitch your solution. Explain that you are very interested in their feedback. Now give them the opportunity to purchase in advance.


If you can get a 10% success rate then you have validated your idea e.g. contact 50 people and 5 people make a purchase.


If less that 10% make a purchase then ask for more feedback and improve your idea.

A great marketing campaign relies on its content. Social Media is so competitive that only great content stands out.


Content should not be intrusive or annoying it should fit seamlessly into the life of your target audience. They should enjoy it.


If you are posting a video on Facebook or YouTube it should be 16:9. For Instagram or Snapchat it should be shot lengthways.


A low res image with a witty comment will perform well on Twitter, but a high res image would be needed for Pinterest.

The metaphor “Sharpen the Saw” if you want to keep sawing is shared. Essentially your rate of success will seldom out grow your rate of personal development.


Your behaviours are important, but working on your character helps with lasting change.


Great achievements require long term goals and clear mission statements. We should always have the end in mind according to Covey.


Working with others is a key focus of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Good business is a transaction where both parties gain from the transaction. Good blogging is the same. Your audience need to get something (information, entertainment, a solution) and the blogger needs to get (a comment, a share, email subscriber or even a sale).


Covey makes the point numerous times that you should think “Win-Win” to get your piece of the pie.


Top Tip #7: [Prioritise] To be truly effective, put “First things, First”

You need to have clear goals in your mind, good habits to guide you and a method to help you decide what is important to complete and what isn’t.


Daily actions and tasks need to be congruent with your monthly, quarterly and yearly goals. If the tasks you are working cannot be mapped onto your goals, then do them later or delegate them altogether.


Its difficult, but to say yes to your primary goals you have to say no to tasks that are not a priority.

As we reach an age where it is believed that large corporations can’t be disrupted by individuals, Vance presents the facts that Musk has managed to do just that.

Voogd is infectious and his no bullshit approach is refreshing. He has attended an expensive business school, built multimillion dollar sales teams but doesn’t bore us with the detail or indulge himself discussing his successes. He provides a framework for you to unpack your life, establish what is important and provide the tools to help you get there.


This is more of a workbook than book, as it will challenge you. To get the most out of it you should answer the questions asked throughout.


Top Tip #9: [Once Committed, Follow Through] Make Decisions based on your Goals, not your Feelings

Make decisions based on your schedule, not how you feel. Short term it will feel better to eat that bad food, skip the gym or write that blog post tomorrow. In the mood or not, if you schedule time in your week to complete something, just do it. Don’t give yourself an out. Reaching your goals long term will feel so much better than any short term reprieve can feel.
