Book #2: Everybody Writes

Author: Anne Handley

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers looking for an edge. Quality writing is overlooked.

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

The words we use as bloggers affect our readers. They can excite, engage and enthral people or cause them to tune out and click away.

There are a few rules that can be learned and applied to your blog that will improve you as a writer.

Top Tip #2:[Sentence Structure] Capture Attention at the START of Sentences

The most important and striking words should be at the start of your sentences, otherwise people may not read on.

Handley highlights an opening sentence of a report by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and shows a better way to write it.

“According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, released in 2006 by the U.S Department of Education, 30 million adults struggle with basic reading tasks.”

Now lets look at a better way to write that sentence.

Thirty million adults struggle with reading, according to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy report, released in 2006 by the U.S. Department of Education.”

The second sentence captures our attention and compels us to read on, the first sentence causes you to zone out.

Conclusion

Get to the point and avoid rambling sentences that contain a needless preamble.

Book #3: Do the Work

Author: Steven Pressfield

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers struggling to complete projects

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

Often when we start to gain a level of success, something gets in the way. We over think our actions, we waste time planning and sometimes even suffer from overwhelm.

You can control the projects that you work on. You can work hard on them everyday and make progress. But you can also be your own worst enemy and do no work.

This inner negativity STOPPING YOU FROM GETTING RESULTS is called RESISTANCE by Pressfield. He explains that it can manifest itself in many forms.

Top Tip #3: [Find Your Why] Beat Resistance with a Compelling Why

When you are struggling ask yourself:

  1. How badly do you want this?
  2. Why do you want this?

Your answer must make you fee totally committed to the end result. A great answer to question 2 is “because I have no choice”.

Conclusion

If you feel energised starting projects, start to wane during them and struggle to complete them, this is the book for you. It helps bloggers get results.

Book #4: Will it Fly?

Author: Pat Flynn

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers with an innovative idea looking to turn it into a business

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

This is a fantastic read (or listen) from Pat Flynn. Many bloggers have great ideas but few manage to turn them into successful businesses.

Market research, understanding your customers problems and rigorous financial validation of ideas are explained in detail. This book will save you both time and money validating your idea and establishing if it can become a business.

It is important to have some congruence between your lifestyle goals and your business goal. Pat also explains that your personal journey does contain an “Unfair Advantage”. Alignment here helps you stay focused.

Great customer anecdotes that emphasise your customers needs will strengthen your idea. Bloggers create avatars to write to, but having actual people share stores of your content helping them will help your blog stand out from the crowd.

Top Tip #4: [Product Validation] Final Validation is Achieved when 10% will Invest in Advance

Initial interest is not enough to prove validation, potential customers must be willing to invest. Contact potential customers and pitch your solution. Explain that you are very interested in their feedback. Now give them the opportunity to purchase in advance.

If you can get a 10% success rate then you have validated your idea e.g. contact 50 people and 5 people make a purchase.

If less that 10% make a purchase then ask for more feedback and improve your idea.

Conclusion

Bloggers with an idea are dangerous. They waste a lot of time and money. Will it Fly? does that it says on the tin. It gives actionable strategies to determine if your idea can become a successful business.

Book #5: The Miracle Morning

Author: Hal Elrod

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers looking to create a better life for themselves.

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

95% of people are not living the life they want for themselves. The average American has $10,000 of debt, is overweight, doesn’t like their job and is mildly depressed. This is fast becoming the norm for most 1st world countries.

Elrod died for 6 minutes in a car crash, spent days in a Coma and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Depression and self-pity set in. He learned not to focus on the past, but to be thankful for the life he has while he builds the life of his dreams.

A morning routine with 6 habits helped him transform his life. This book turned me from a night owl to someone who gets up energised at 5am or 6am on weekdays.

Silence, Affirmations, Visualisation, Exercise, Reading, Scribing (Life S.A.V.E.R.S.) are the 6 components of the Miracle Morning routine.

Top Tip #5: [Meditate] Successful People Meditate, follow guided meditation free on YouTube

Richard Branson, Tony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Pat Flynn, Gisele Bündchen, Michelle Obama and many senior executives in large companies all talk publically about their meditation habits.

Meditating on a regular basis improves your mind-set and costs you nothing. All you need is 5-10 minutes. There are plenty of guided meditations you can follow for free on YouTube.

This is proven to reduce stress, improve your health, boost creativity and preserve cognitive function into old age.

Conclusion

A morning ritual will help you live a more fulfilling successful life. Practising mediation, saying affirmations aloud, visualising your day, doing some exercise, reading and journaling will help you start your day perfectly.

Your happiness, calmness and fulfilment as you enter the day ahead will have a positively profound effect on your day and your life.

Book #6: Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook

Author: Gary Vaynerchuck

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers looking to Dominate Social Media

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

Bloggers shout loud on social media and wonder why their not getting the success they believe they deserve.

There are literally billions of voices and brands on social media all fighting to grab peoples attention.

Vaynerchuk states that you must know your what your story is and how to present it natively on social media platforms.

Top Tip #6: [Native Social Content] Great Marketing Requires Great Native Content

A great marketing campaign relies on its content. Social Media is so competitive that only great content stands out.

Content should not be intrusive or annoying it should fit seamlessly into the life of your target audience. They should enjoy it.

If you are posting a video on Facebook or YouTube it should be 16:9. For Instagram or Snapchat it should be shot lengthways.

A low res image with a witty comment will perform well on Twitter, but a high res image would be needed for Pinterest.

With so much competition, your content needs to be native and appealing to get attention. Just recycling content across all social media platforms will cause it to get ignored if it does not meet the typical native content delivery principles of the platform.

Conclusion

More and more of peoples lives are spent on social media. There is no “one size fits all” silver bullet. Understand your brand, what social media platforms your audience hangs out on and create great native content.

Book #7: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Author: Stephen R.Covey

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers who want to make lasting change to become more productive

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

First published in 1989, its a book I refer back to every few years.

The metaphor “Sharpen the Saw” if you want to keep sawing is shared. Essentially your rate of success will seldom out grow your rate of personal development.

Your behaviours are important, but working on your character helps with lasting change.

Great achievements require long term goals and clear mission statements. We should always have the end in mind according to Covey.

Working with others is a key focus of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Good business is a transaction where both parties gain from the transaction. Good blogging is the same. Your audience need to get something (information, entertainment, a solution) and the blogger needs to get (a comment, a share, email subscriber or even a sale).

Covey makes the point numerous times that you should think “Win-Win” to get your piece of the pie.

Top Tip #7: [Prioritise] To be truly effective, put “First things, First”

You need to have clear goals in your mind, good habits to guide you and a method to help you decide what is important to complete and what isn’t.

Daily actions and tasks need to be congruent with your monthly, quarterly and yearly goals. If the tasks you are working cannot be mapped onto your goals, then do them later or delegate them altogether.

Its difficult, but to say yes to your primary goals you have to say no to tasks that are not a priority.

What are your Top 3 Blogging goals for the next 3 months? Now look at your tasks and prioritise the tasks that align your goals.

Conclusion

Take control of your life, don’t let other peoples priorities dictate your time. A personal framework that guides your daily decision making and aligns to your monthly, quarterly and annual goals is needed for continued success. Remember its not about becoming more efficient, but more effective.

Book #8: Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future

Author: Ashlee Vance

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers looking for inspiration and the courage to go big with their ideas.

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

PayPal, Tesla, Solar City, SpaceX are some of the great companies started by Elon Musk. His drive, self belief and achievements are truly astounding. With an estimated net worth of $11.5 billion, the real life “Tony Stark” has not been afraid to put everything on the line.

Vance gives us a unique perspective on this great man. Chronicling his struggles, key turning points and rise to prominence.

As we reach an age where it is believed that large corporations can’t be disrupted by individuals, Vance presents the facts that Musk has managed to do just that.

He has transformed Space travel, making it cheaper with greater efficiencies. The automotive industry were laughing at the thoughts of electric cars and now each vendor is scrambling to get their “electric” car released.

It is possible for bloggers to disrupt the marketplace. If you have an idea and can envisage how something can be done better, don’t be afraid to back yourself.

Top Tip #8: [Align Projects & Goals] Have Bold Ambition & Align Your Current Projects to your Long Term Goals

“If something is important enough you should try, even if the probably outcome is failure.” -Elon Musk

Have a Bold long term goal. Musk is looking to get the human race to live on Mars. Again we see congruency crop up, Space Travel (transport), Electric Cars & Solar City (battery power) align with a much bigger goal.

Conclusion

Adventure, adversity and entrepreneurial genius demonstrated over a lifetime of great stories makes this an inspirational read (or listen).

Book #9: 6 Months to 6 Figures

Author: Peter Voogd

Who Should Read This?

Bloggers looking for strategies to monetise

[Free Access] Read or Listen Free:

Overview

Where are you going in life? How will your life be better in 6 months, 12 months or even in two years time? The value you bring to the market rewards you, if you bring little value you get little reward.

Voogd is infectious and his no bullshit approach is refreshing. He has attended an expensive business school, built multimillion dollar sales teams but doesn’t bore us with the detail or indulge himself discussing his successes. He provides a framework for you to unpack your life, establish what is important and provide the tools to help you get there.

This is more of a workbook than book, as it will challenge you. To get the most out of it you should answer the questions asked throughout.

Top Tip #9: [Once Committed, Follow Through] Make Decisions based on your Goals, not your Feelings

Make decisions based on your schedule, not how you feel. Short term it will feel better to eat that bad food, skip the gym or write that blog post tomorrow. In the mood or not, if you schedule time in your week to complete something, just do it. Don’t give yourself an out. Reaching your goals long term will feel so much better than any short term reprieve can feel.

Conclusion

Voogd provides strategies that get results. If you are looking to have a more successful blog, better life and become more financially free that this is a must read.

Practical advice on connecting with your audience is the biggest takeaway from “Ask”. Levesque provides strategies that will coax your potential audience into sharing their needs and wants. This will enable you to build blog content and products that people want to pay for.

If you are running a blog and a little unclear on your audience’s nuances then this is essential reading. Segmentation, connecting with his audience and servicing their needs is what grew his fortune. Once you have started building your list, the strategies in Ask will accelerate this success for you.

Top Tip #10: [Survey] Ask Short Questions & Use Conversational Language

Find out more about your audience on your website or by contacting your email list. Keep survey questions short (Yes/No if possible) and in conversational language.
